South Woodham Ferrers Underpass Mural

Commissioned as one of the selected artists from over 200 submissions, Lily designed and delivered a 95-foot mural for South Woodham Ferrers as part of Concrete Canvas Reimagined in May 2026. The project formed part of the wider Concrete Canvas initiative, extending the renowned Chelmsford mural festival into neighbouring towns to bring large-scale public art to new communities.

The mural was developed through a series of three community workshops, inviting local residents to contribute ideas, stories and aspirations that helped shape the final design. More than 80 members of the community, including children, families and residents of all ages, then came together to help paint sections of the mural, creating a true collaborative artwork.

Celebrating colour, creativity and community, the finished mural transformed a once ordinary underpass into a vibrant public space that reflects the identity and collective contribution of the people who use it every day. The project demonstrates how public art can foster connection, encourage participation and create a lasting sense of pride within a community.
