I recently hosted a special event to celebrate the launch of Volume Four of the Inspirational Women Colouring Book Collection—the most meaningful edition I’ve created to date. Held at the wonderful Dial Lane Books, thanks to the generosity of Andrew, the event brought together friends, family, and the local community in a vibrant celebration marking both the new release and the end of Women’s History Month.
For those new to the project, “Uwu” means “colourful” in my family’s native tongue, Kwale. This collection features 10 remarkable women—historic artists and contemporary creators—who share a deep love for colour and have each made a lasting impact on the art world.
The journey of Uwu Studio began as a response to the mono-cultural, Eurocentric education I experienced growing up in the UK. Passionate about art, culture, and literature, I began researching and celebrating women and people of colourwhose stories were missing from the mainstream. This exploration transformed my creative practice and inspired me to share that knowledge—especially with young people of colour.
The colouring book series began in 2020 as a way to engage with identity, history, and creativity through interactive, line-only portraits. It’s a conceptual invitation to colour in and connect with powerful stories—on your own terms.
Following the incredible response to Volume One and a second edition focused on activists, Volume Four continues this mission. I hope it inspires you as much as it’s inspired me. Photos by Kezia Tan - Kezia Tan Media .
